This book presents simple approximate methods of analyzing embankment, gravity and arch dams for design studies, preliminary designs, estimates of quantities, checking computational methods, and teaching. Emphasis is placed on understanding the mechanical behavior of the dam rather than the computational details. Also included are 26 fully-worked examples of dams in Europe, India and the USA, whose actual behavior is known from in situ measurements. A comparison of the measurements and the approximate analysis shows that the future behavior of a dam can be reliably predicted by these methods. Of course, these approximate calculations are also very much quicker to perform than the ‘exact’ analyses and have the additional benefit that there is less opportunity for error to occur. Three fully-worked preliminary design examples -- one for and embankment dam with a vertical central core, one for a straight gravity dam, and one for a double-curvature arch dam -- explain the proposed simplified methods of analysis in every detail. On account of its straightforward approach that does not necessitate the application of higher mathematics, the book will be particularly useful to those who are new to dam engineering. However, all dam engineers will find the simplified techniques proposed of interest. |
