Sustainable development, building on brownfield sites and the use of marginal and derelict land have led to an increase in the need to produce innovative solutions to the complex problems of urban ground engineering. The papers presented in this volume address the wide range of geotechnical issues associated with development in urban areas. The volume is arranged in two sections: Part one is devoted to the use of tunnelling to provide infrastructure in areas where intense development has taken place on the ground surface or where physical conditions would otherwise hinder further development. Part two examines other geotechnical factors associated with a rapidly developing urban environment and highlights the extent of the geotechnical - and related - hazards which must be overcome for development to be successful. The full spectrum of geotechnical activities involved in urban ground engineering are explored, ranging from the use of case histories and reviewing existing data to the techniques and proceedures associated with new construction works. In progressing across this spectrum, the proceedings also provide insight into appropriate ground investigation, the reliable interpretation of actual data and the advances made in design and analysis. |
