This book presents the first single source of detailed guidance for designers, specifiers and constructors of in-situ concrete industrial hardstandings. Despite the fact that in-situ concrete is used commonly as the construction material of industrial hardstandings, little guidance is available to the designer. In the past, industrial hardstandings have been engineered by adapting the methods and materials used in highways and industrial ground supported floors, often leading to the inappropriate use of materials and construction methods. The need for a rigorous methodology has become greater following the introduction of heavy container handling equipment which may apply wheel loads an order of magnitude greater than those applied by highway vehicles. The book begins with an overview of hardstanding materials and construction methods, focusing on polypropylene and steel fibres. Working methods, specification data and design strengths are provided for commercially available fibres. The author reviews some of the categories of loading commonly occurring on industrial hardstandings and deals in particular with the effects of container handling and storage systems. He includes a design chart which will allow in-situ concrete hardstandings to be proportioned. Case studies draw on the author's experience to cover the difficulties which can arise with hardstandings and illustrate construction techniques. The book concludes with a full set of contract documents which may be used as a basis for the reader's own project. In-situ concrete hardstandings are frequently the single most expensive element of a civil engineering project, but they are often constructed without specialist knowledge of the subject. This invaluable book will provide the guidance that is needed in a single reference source for all engineers involved in this field.
