Asbestos and Man-made Mineral Fibres

1999, 96 pages
$54.80

Since the early 1950s, Asbestos has been widely used in a variety of loft and cavity wall insulation in UK homes. Some 6 million tonnes of asbestos material has been imported, of which around 4.4 million tonnes has been used in building products such as roofing, cladding, thermal insulation and fire-resistant internal paneling. However, when the risks of asbestos exposure became known, controls were gradually introduced and now many uses of asbestos are now banned in the UK. Nevertheless, many commercial, public and domestic buildings still contain asbestos material, and in some cases the use is still permitted, especially asbestos cement products such as roofing tiles and profiled sheets. This new guide produced by the DETR replaces the well established publication Asbestos materials in buildings, last revised in 1991. This practical guide deals with asbestos and MMMF (Man-made mineral fibres) to provide guidance on the management of such materials in buildings. It provides advice on the identification and handling of materials containing mineral fibres, and on any risk they may pose to people at home and in other settings. Environmental health professionals, particularly local authority staff with responsibility for public buildings and housing, will find this document extremely valuable. Building owners and managers, maintenance engineers, fire officers, surveyors and consultants who may require information or advice on the management of asbestos materials will also find this guide useful.
