The field of civil engineering offers specific challenges to the higher education sector. Civil engineering’s blend of management, design and analysis requires people with a combination of academic and experimental knowledge and both knowledge- and skill-based abilities. Learning technology offers potential solutions to some of these challenges. Professional development and updating of knowledge can also be supported through the application of information technology, and provide opportunities to develop new markets for open and distance learning. This volume brings together papers by leading practitioners in the field of learning technology, within the discipline of civil engineering, to facilitate the sharing of experience, knowledge and expertise. The volume is organized under five main themes: integration into the curriculum, courseware development, internet-based learning, professional development and institutional strategies. The coming years will see significant changes in both the education process and the way that industry and academia interact. |
