This proceedings, Engineering Mechanics—Ninth Conference, consists of the texts of the three keynote lectures and brief summaries of submitted papers presented at the Engineering Mechanics Conference in College Station, Texas on May 24-27, 1992. The keynote lectures consider the topics of geomechanics of subsidence due to pumping of a ground water, adaptive and parallel methods for nonlinear solid mechanics, and probabilistic mechanics in civil engineering. The fifty-six sessions of contributed papers encompass virtually all of the areas of mechanics within civil engineering, including sessions proposed and organized by every technical committee of the Engineering Mechanics Division of ASCE covering such subjects as bioengineering, computational mechanics, dynamics, elasticity, experimental analysis and instrumentation, fluids, inelastic behavior, probabilistic methods, properties of materials, stability, and turbulence.
