This proceedings, Degradation of Natural Building Stone represents an effort to collate the various disciplines working in the area of building stone degradation. Structures composed of natural building stones are subjected through time to mechanical loads, temperature variations, and chemical attacks that result in degradation of the material in the form of microcracks. Damage diagnosis of natural stone is the first stage of planning needed for proper remedial action and restoration. To this end, case histories and successful experimental procedures are emphasized in this proceedings. It is the hope that this publication will encourage a dialog among civil engineers, contractors, and architects in order to develop efficient, economic, and safe restoration and preservation policies. |
