Big Digs Around the World

1998, 432 pages
$75.00

This proceedings, Big Digs Around the World, consists of papers presented at sessions sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE held in conjunction with the ASCE Annual Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, October 18-21, 1998. These papers discuss some of the geotechnical challenges faced on massive underground construction projects in different cities all over the globe. Many of the projects are for major subway constructions, new and extensions. The magnitude of these major infrastructure underground constructions is discussed. Challenging aspects of the construction of special design features or techniques are presented in some detail. The subway construction in Singapore, Tokyo, Taipei, Shanghai, Seoul, Hong Kong, Cairo, Los Angeles, Toronto, Washington, D.C., Santiago, Brasilia, Caracas, and London have all been massive big dig efforts, and each has had special challenges. Other projects are presented for Berlin, Tokyo Bay, Bogota, Mexico City, and Puerto Rico. A discussion of NATM for soft ground situations also is included. Numerous references are provided with most papers for background on issues and solutions.
