Change and learning how to adapt to it are keys to success in the modern organization. In the first of three articles based on his book, Reengineering the Organization, the author says that change is both an opportunity and a threat. Change provides the chance to adapt to the strategies and systems that will eliminate competitors. But change can be disorienting, especially since it is faster and more widespread than ever before. Historical examples demonstrate how much change itself has changed over the centuries. There are two types of change, structural and cyclical. Structural change results in fundamental and irreversible transformation of an organization or some aspect of it. The organization and its members must permanently adjust to this kind of change. Cyclical change is a temporary fluctuation in an activity or organization, which eventually reverts to its original state. This requires temporary adjustments. Reengineering of an organization enables it to adjust to both kinds of change. The reengineered corporation delivers total customer satisfaction through effective and efficient internal processes.
