Provides information concerning winter sports trauma -including alpine, cross country, and back country skiing, and snowboarding- and the means of its prevention. 16 peer-reviewed papers in 4 sections: Safety and Behavior--6 papers including: a comparison of young injured and uninjured skiers and snowboarders regarding knowledge of safety rules; observations concerning vision, an essential factor for skiing safety; present customs and practices used by U.S. ski areas in developing and maintaining ski trails, and the means used to reduce the risk of injury; the hazard of fatal avalanches between 1986 and 1995 in Austria; and the effect of a warm-up program designed to reduce the risk of alpine skiing injuries. Biomechanics--3 papers on ACL injury; snowboarding and ankle deflection; and injury mechanisms of the anterior cruciate ligament. Bindings--3 papers on forces and moments measured at the toe and heel of bindings during skiing activities; signal detection theory to evaluate binding function; and the feasibility of releasable binds for snowboards. Epidemiology--4 papers cover: a study of snowboarding injuries from 1988-1996 in Colorado; spinal cord injuries involving skiers; femur fractures; and an evaluation of the epidemiology of 70,000 injured skiers and 8,000 snowboarders. |
