ITEM: 30004 Some water sources have too much; some have too little, but rarely is it just right. It's fluoride, a naturally occurring chemical in water that has a unique human health benefit: it reduces tooth decay if ingested within prescribed limits. Therefore, many local health agencies direct water utilities to adjust their fluoride levels. Fluoridation treatment of drinking water is the addition or removal of fluoride to maintain an optimum level to reduce tooth decay. Since fluoridation treatment became common practice over 50 years ago, tooth decay has been reduced 40 to 65 percent. Newly revised and approved by the AWWA Distribution and Plant Operations Division Board of Trustees, Water Fluoridation Principles and Practices, Fifth Edition will assist decision makers planning fluoridation installations, engineers designing them, and water utility personnel operating them.
