RAPID DETECTION OF BIOTERRORISM AGENTS IN WATER SUPPLIES

ISBN: N/A
Pages: 98
Published: 2008

Price: $209.00

Municipal water distribution systems are vulnerable to attack by bioterrorists using toxins, bacteria, spores, or viruses. This report discusses methods and materials for detecting a variety of toxic agents in finished water, along with specific results from these methods and materials.

This information is necessary to developing both fixed and portable instruments based on microbead immunoassay methodology for monitoring water supplies. The ultimate goal for this research is to provide a monitoring device with fast analysis, low limit of detection, and high accuracy for bioterrorism agents.

Both electrochemical and fluorescence detection were developed and tested using finished water samples collected from representative water distribution systems throughout the US. Immunoassays were developed and evaluated with simulants for the four categories of biological agents: toxins (ovalbumin), bacteria (E. coli O157:H7, heat killed), spores (B. globigii and B. anthracis Stern strain, gamma irradiated), and viruses (MS2 bacteriophage).
