The intent of this Guidebook is to provide the users of ASME Section
VIII (Div. 1 and 2) and Section IX with an explanation of all technical
revisions and the background behind the revisions introduced in the new
2004 Code. Being aware of the intent of the revision will provide the
Code user a better understanding of the change and its significance.
A new edition of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code is published
every three years. Revisions that are approved by the Code Main Committee,
during the two years subsequent to the publication of a new Edition, are
published as Addenda, with colored sheets to replace the previous revision
of the affected pages. The revisions approved during the third year of
the cycle are introduced with the next Edition. The 2004 Code is a new
Edition and contains many important changes to Section VIII and Section
IX. Some of the ASME Section VIII coverage include:
background behind the recently published Part UHX,
requirements regarding design of heat exchangers which are now in Part
UHX,
new mandatory rules for the design of tube sheets (formerly in non-mandatory
Appendix AA),
revised rules for supported tube sheets,
background explanation and implications of revisions to design rules for
formed heads and new buckling critreria,
background explanation and application of new rules on local thin areas,
explanation of the new class of inspector called "Certified Individual",
revision of secondary stress limits in a number of Code paragraphs,
introduction of new weld joint types in Table UW-12,
addition of new post-weld heat treatment requirements for low temperature
design,
revised rules for flanged and flued expansion joints,
revised rules for dimpled and embossed assemblies,
extension of fatigue curves,
introduction of a new appendix on quick actuating closures,
completely revised rules for expansion bellows,
new Code Cases providing for use of power actuated relief valves,
new Code Cases offering alternative method of vessel marking,
explanation of metrication of the Code and its implications, and
explanation of new Section VIII Code Interpretations.
Also included in this Guidebook is an introduction to a several significant
Code Cases, mostly related to design, published during the past three
years. Most Code Cases are related to materials requirements or introduction
of new materials and such Code Cases are not covered in this publication.
However, the fabrication related Code Cases are generally made for specific,
limited applications. The Code Cases discussed in this publication are
those that introduce significant alternatives to the rules of the Code.
One reason for introducing these alternative rules in a Code Case (rather
than revising the Code) is to provide the code users a trial period to
become familiar with the new rules, while still having the option of using
the old rules. If warranted, such Code Cases will eventually replace the
older rules in the Code.
This new edition of the Guidebook also features coverage of ASME Section
IX for the first time. Some of the ASME Section IX coverage includes:
addition of new temper bead welding rules,
additions, revisions and deletions of essential variables and non-essential
variables,
addition of new mandatory Appendix F and nonmandatory Appendix G, and
explanation of new Section IX Code Interpretations.
