By R.J. Twigg

This publication surveys information from major facility mothballing programs in chemical, petrochemical, refining, power generation, and oil exploration industries. It determines appropriate measures for mothballing or protecting equipment and includes exclusion of moisture, establishment of inert atmospheres, and selection of preservative compounds. It appraises equipment condition, idle period, experience at other plants, and what equipment should or should not be mothballed. Evaluates protective systems to reduce corrosion found in idle plants such as film type, greases and oils, volatile inhibitors, environmental alterations, inert gases, and multicomponent systems.
