A new emerging area of engineering focuses on the synergistic integration of smart (active, adaptive) materials, structure, sensors, actuators, controls, electronics, and other components. This multi-disciplinary area, recognized as one of the key technologies of the 21st century, was explored at the Second Scientific Conference on Smart Mechanical Systems held at the University of Magdeburg, one of the leading German research centers in this field. The papers address recent problems of smart materials systems and actuators, finite element analysis of smart structure, optimization of actuator and sensor distribution, modeling of actuators, active damping, control of smart structures, experimental results, and applications of smart structures for active control of vibration and shape.
