Hybrid III: the First Human-Like Crash Test Dummy
Authors: Stanley H. Backaitis and Harold J. Mertz, November 1993, 830 Pages, 4 Sections, Hardbound
$40.00

The Hybrid III was a human-like adult male crash test dummy developed by General Motors Corporation in the 1970s to improve the biofidelity and injury prediction measurement capacity of mechanical human simulations used in automotive occupant restraint testing. The Hybrid III is now used in new vehicle development programs by all domestic car manufacturers and most foreign car manufacturers. This book looks at the important characteristics of the dummy and documents the basis of work used in its development.

Contents include:

  • Section 1: Assembly drawing of the dummy; parts lists; test procedure and response corridors used to verify impact performance
  • Section 2: The development of the dummy
  • Section 3: Assessing occupant restraint effectiveness;
  • Section 4: Hybrid III restraint interactions; The math modeling of Hybrid III, both lumped parameter and finite element modeling

An appendix section is also included, featuring abstracted references for additional information on Hybrid III.
