Fuel Cell Powered Vehicles: Automotive Technology of the Future - Update
Daniel J. Holt, February 2003, 74 Pages, Paperbound
$480.00

Fuel cell technology has been around for over 150 years even traveling to the far reaches of outer space with the NASA program, but in automotive applications it was not considered a viable alternative to the internal combustion engine. However, recent pressures to achieve lower emissions and higher fuel economy while maintaining performance and reliability, has increased forcing the automotive industry toinvestigate new areas of powerplant technology. The developments in fuel cells are making headlines as the technology emerges from the research labs to power concept vehicles. Several OEMs plan to produce fuel cell vehicles (FCV) in limited quantities as early as the end of 2003. As FCVs take the road, the remaining challenges must be addressed before we see these vehicles on the dealer showroom floor. The report examines the remaining challenges, in particular the issue of what fuel should be used and the necessary refueling infrastructure. Concluding with a look to the future , it discusses when and if fuel cell vehicles (FCV) will become a reality.
